What does being successful mean?
I can get a bit carried away when talking, so forgive me for the long-winded response to your simple question.
Success is a subjective term. Take my mother, for instance; she's successful in my eyes. She raised eight children despite never finishing high school, getting a driver's license, or even learning to swim. To me, she's one of the most accomplished people I know.
But how do we measure success? It's about fulfilling your role in the world. If your abilities have positively influenced and blessed numerous people during your time on this planet, that's a sign of success. Success isn't just a one-time thing; it's about continually utilizing your talents and growing your skills. Whether becoming a parent or starting a new career, each new endeavor gives you a fresh opportunity to succeed.
Money in the bank isn't the ultimate measure of success. No one lies on their deathbed wishing they had more money. Instead, they often regret not putting more effort into their relationships. So, maybe we should evaluate success based on the number of meaningful connections we have.
Honestly, I'm not sure I've been successful. Did I give it all? Could I have done more? The answer is a resounding yes. But sometimes, our expectations of ourselves don't align with what God expects. It reminds me of a wise person who once told me that I set higher standards for myself than even God does. Can you believe that? Are we being too hard on ourselves compared to how God sees us? It's something worth pondering.
We often aim for perfection, but it's an impossible target for flawed humans. Striving for perfection can be a slippery slope; some say it's a gradual path to self-destruction. Instead, we should focus on progress and growth, which can lead to genuine success.
Ultimately, the measure of true success may be our impact on others. When people show up at our burial one day, sharing how we've positively affected their lives, perhaps that's how we should define success: when our name appears in someone else's heartfelt testimonial.
